While Charlotte is a relatively small city, its airport is quite big with 8 major airlines, 15 regional airlines, and 3 foreign ones serving 181 nonstop destinations, including 37 internationally. In 2023, over 53 million passengers passed through, the 22nd busiest by passengers worldwide according to Airports Council International. The single terminal opened in 1982 and the land-side areas are being renovated into 2025. However, the air-side part is quite cramped and old with insufficient seating for the closely-packed gates. The building is divided into 5 concourses. Charlotte is a major hub for American Airlines, a legacy of US Airways that was absorbed into the airline in 2015.
