The Kaiserdom opened in 1239 and was the location of 10 imperial coronations over some 200 years. Expansion continued in subsequent centuries, but it was damaged in World War II. Today's nave is decorated in bright red thanks to restoration in the 1990's.

Just a block away, handsome and tidy residentials lined the neighbouring streets.

Several bridges cross the river around here. They all offer great vantage points to the skyline. With the museums on the other side closed on Monday, there was not much use to make the full crossing.

Heading back to the Hauptwache, I proceed north to explore a few new skyscrapers co-existing with historic architecure.

The Frankfurt Stock Exchange building was completed in 1879. Tours of the exchange, including the floor viewing deck, are usually available, but like many other attractions, had closed for the Christmas break already on the 24th.

They also believe in bulls and bears in Germany.

The Eschenheimer Tor is the only remaining gate in Frankfurt's old fortifications. The 47m Gothic tower dates from the early 15th century.

Heading back to the Galeria shopping centre, the top floor has an open deck and restaurant with wonderful views of the modern skyline and also the historic centre.

Goetheplatz is lined with majestic historic buildings and modern buildings. Their common trait is the height.
