Guangzhou Photo Gallery - Dongshan

Dongshan was once home to the powerful, where overseas Chinese, wealthy businessmen, and political elites lived a century ago. Blending Western architectural styles, the grand homes are still relatively well preserved, spread out across a few leafy streets around Dongshankou metro station.

The area's rise began during the Qing Dynasty thanks to industrial development and foreign trade. Since World War I, many overseas Chinese returned and with the government nearby, it attracted a more powerful clientele to call this area home, from lawmakers, revolutionaries to businessmen.

I had asked at the park office where all the nice mansions are. She pointed me towards a high school, which is on the east side of the avenue.

Kui Yuan was built in 1922 by an overseas Chinese. It has been beautifully restored with an art exhibition space on the ground floor and various meeting rooms and lounges upstairs.
