Dongshan was once home to the powerful, where overseas Chinese, wealthy businessmen, and political elites lived a century ago. Blending Western architectural styles, the grand homes are still relatively well preserved, spread out across a few leafy streets around Dongshankou metro station.
The area's rise began during the Qing Dynasty thanks to industrial development and foreign trade. Since World War I, many overseas Chinese returned and with the government nearby, it attracted a more powerful clientele to call this area home, from lawmakers, revolutionaries to businessmen.
