The Sun Yat-Sen Memorial Hall was built by city residents and overseas Chinese to commemorate the revolutionary leader, founder of modern China. Construction began in 1928 and spanned 3 years. At 12,000 square metres, it is the largest such hall for Dr. Sun in the world.Sun Yat-sen was born in 1866 in present-day Zhongshan, a short distance away from Guangzhou. He studied in Hawaii and Hong Kong and felt change was needed as the weak and conservative Qing Dynasty kneeled at the mercy of the more technologically-advanced countries. He became a major figure who helped overthrow the Qing Dynasty.
