Lantau Trail's Section 9 is an easy but scenic hike from Shek Pik Reservoir to the village of Shui Hau, passing through a rock carving, forests, ocean views, and even a beach. At about 6.5km long, it's an easy few hours and you can combine it with other attractions on Lantau's south coast. From Tung Chung, take bus 11 or 11A and get off at Shek Pik Police Stand, which is just before the reservoir dam. Since the 11 heads to Tai O, a major tourist destination, opt for the 11A, which is a short-turn, has a cheaper fare, likely less crowded, but only operates on weekends.
I could see the buddha statue at Ngong Ping on the hills across the other side of the reservoir. There are plenty of expert-level hiking trails along those stretches.
Just behind the bus stop is a paved narrow road. Head in and follow the signs.
A prison sits on the other side of the dam facing the sea.
After a short downhill section, you will reach an intersection. Continue right downhill and follow the sign for the rock carving. You will return back to this point after to head left to continue along the trail.
The service road does get some occasional traffic from the prison workers and supply trucks.
The rock carving comprises of geometric patterns and is believed to be some 3000 years old. Located just outside the prison fence and about 300m from the coast today, it was believed a sea inlet once reached this point.
The trail is paved so far and is relatively easy. As the paved section ends, you can see the prison on the other side of the water.
The dirt trail that follows is also not difficult to hike, with sections of long staircases that eventually open up to beautiful views.
After the exposed scenic section, it is a long downhill journey on a staircase made of large boulders to the beach at Lo Kei Wan.
While this beach is quite small compared to others along Lantau's southern coast, it is quite secluded but still accessible from Shui Hau village, which will be this hike's end point.
After a short break, it is a long climb back up to the paved road to Shui Hau.
I was happy to see this intersection with a paved path back to civilization. It would be flat from now on.
The paved path ends at Shui Hau, where you can catch bus 11, 11A, or 23 back to Tung Chung.
