Malta Photo Gallery - Birgu

Also known as Vittoriosa, Birgu is just across the water from Valletta and formed part of the maritime fortress that defended the Grand Harbour.

Fort St. Angelo was christened by the Order of St. John in 1530 as their headquarters. The original medieval castle was eventually redeveloped into a series of artillery platforms that formed a major defensive mechanism for the Grand Harbour.

The Maritime Museum is located in the Old Naval Bakery. With the country surrounded by sea, it is not surprising this is the country's largest museum.

Further inland, there are quiet streets with the typical architecture less the tourist crowds of Valletta.

The Inquisitor’s Palace was first used in 1574. It was upgraded with successive inquisitors and became a Roman palace by the mid-18th century. Having survived bombings during World War II, it is now a museum that is open to the public.
