New College was founded in 1379 with a beautiful chapel and cloisters, which are part of the original college buildings and intended as an area of quiet meditation and study. There is a huge garden bordered by the city wall, whose history goes further back to the 12th century. The college is responsible for maintaining the wall, with the Lord Mayor and the corporation inspecting it every 3 years.
