The University of Oxford comprises a number of different colleges of various names. The oldest trace their histories back to the 13th century, and they became a famous place for learning that was recognized by the Church and royalty over the centuries.

Most colleges set their own admission charges to visit and have their own opening hours, so getting a comprehensive view of the town may get costly very quickly.

Among the famous people who studied or taught here are 28 British Prime Ministers and 55 Nobel Prize winners such as Bill Clinton, Lester B. Pearson, and Sir Thomas More.

Picturesque and full of historic architecture, Oxford is a wonderful day trip from London, although you need to pick and choose which colleges to see since it will be impossible to fit all the major ones into a single day. There are also a few huge museums that are comparable to the great ones in London.

Get here by coach from London Victoria or by train from London Paddington.
