All Souls College is just to the east and admits only "fellows", or distinguished scholars, through election by existing fellows or by exam.It was planned and built in the early 15th century by the Archbishop of Canterbury, receiving its foundation charter from King Henry VI in 1438. It was envisioned as an institute of advanced study, a graduate college in today's speak, so it historically never admitted undergraduates. The Gothic chapel includes a black baroque screen designed by Sir James Thornhill in 1716.
Balliol College's origins date to a violent confrontation between John de Balliol and the Bishop of Durham in 1260. The Bishop imposed a punishment on John to perform a substantial act of charity, which became a house of scholars. Upon his death in 1269, his widow established a permanent endowment to keep the house running.
For members, dining on campus is fairly affordable, with a 1-course lunch costing 3.8 pounds and a 1-course dinner only 4.6 pounds.
Keble College opened in 1870 and was named after John Keble, who wanted to recover the church's Catholic heritage. The college wanted to provide an education to "gentlemen wishing to live economically".
