Oxford Photo Gallery - Covered Market

Although the entrances from High Street are a bit subtle, the interiors of the historic Covered Market are quite grand and beautiful.

Opened in 1774 after over 2 years of construction, this building was meant to replace congested street markets on Fish Street and Butchers Row. It originally contained 40 butcher shops divided into organized blocks. Other trades soon joined.

By the 19th century, it underwent several alterations and expansions, beginning in 1838 and leading up to 1894. Today's market consists of 4 avenues stretching from High Street to Market Street, and offers a more varied retail offering such as restaurants and souvenirs in addition to daily grocery items.
