Rydal Cave is a former quarry that produced roofing slates during the 19th century. Located between Ambleside and Grasmere, it's an easy and popular hike today made famous by Netflix. But set your expectations as this is man-made despite being surrounded by a beautiful lake and mountains.Driving north along the main road A591 from Windermere, park at Pelter Bridge just after Ambleside, and there is a path next to it heading uphill. It's not a long hike to reach the cave, initially through wooded areas but the scenery opens up with Rydal Water and mountains on your right.
The final stretch is more difficult with a rocky surface as you plough uphill towards the cave. There was water flowing downhill through the rocks as well so it got slightly slippery but still manageable.
The cave is at the top of the hill. It is also possible to hike from Grasmere in the other direction as well. The cave is partially submerged in water but there is a stone path to lead you deeper inside.
