Shizuoka Photo Gallery - Kakegawa Castle

Castles are a common sight in historic Japanese towns. Pretty much anywhere in the country you go to, there is a castle, original or renovated, within striking distance. Just 50km or 45 minutes out of Shizuoka on the local train is Kakegawa. While the castle's original tower was destroyed by earthquake in 1854, there is a restored one on show now from the 1990s.

The town was quiet during the mid-afternoon when I arrived. From the train station, it is a straight line walk past empty streets for about 10 minutes to the castle.

I came here because the castle offers a nice view from its tower, which stands 56m above sea level. Originally built in the 15th century, it was remodeled by the next rulers in the late 16th century. Today's restoration was the first in Japan with wood as opposed to steel-reinforced concrete.

Enjoy the views on all 4 sides.

Satisfied, I headed back down to Ninomaru Palace to see its simply-decorated rooms.

It certainly is smaller than the more famous castles in the region such as Himeji, but Kakegawa is empty of tourists so you have the place pretty much all to yourself for a lovely hour or so exploring the site.
