Shinhotaka Ropeway Photo Gallery

Shinhotaka Ropeway is 1.5 hours away from Takayama on the highway bus. Various combination tickets are available for tourists, some of which include a mix of onsen, ropeway, and even food.
While the scenery is not as majestic as the Alpine Route further north, the novelty of this attraction is the country's only double-decker gondola ropeway, which takes you to the observation deck 2156m above sea level.

The observation deck is large enough to accommodate a gondola of visitors to spread out horizontally to enjoy the mountain views. Stick around to watch the double-deckers come in and out, making the trip between Shirakabadaira (1308m) and Nishihotakaguchi (2156m).

There isn't enough to keep you here for more than an hour, and it didn't take long for me to line up for the ride back downhill. It is theoretically possible to do this in half a day from Takayama, but with the long bus ride to the ropeway, just take your time to catch your breath up here.
