Windermere is one of the Lake District's main towns with frequent buses to neighbouring Ambleside and Grasmere as well as further north to Keswick. There is also a train station here, with the journey from Manchester taking as little as an hour and a half.Victorian holiday-makers were able to access the Lake District easily when the railway was completed in 1847, and a new town grew around the station, named Windermere. The train station and main bus stop are next to each other, as well as a large supermarket where you can stock up on groceries if you have self-catering accommodations. The town's shopping street is down the hill a short walk away and well worth a stroll. Similar to Bowness, there are a lot of independent shops, cafes, and art galleries.
