Toyama Photo Gallery - Part 2

The Iwase area has a street of historic 19th century buildings. This part of town was the port, which had prospered from the Kitamaebune sea trade from the 17th to 19th centuries. Getting here is easy with the 8km Portram line from the main railway station.

The Mori residence was built in 1878 for this shipping magnate's family. The Kitamaebune cargo ships brought rice, herring, seaweed, and traditional medicine between Hokkaido and Japan's southern ports. The admission is a very modest 100 yen.

Tourists were hard to come by in these quiet streets.

The Toyama Port Observation Deck offers a view of the area, but the windows are not clear, which is a waste for such a good vantage point.

From the port, it is a short walk along the canal back to the tram line's terminus.
