Wuyishan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999 for both its subtropical forest and cultural heritage. Considered a sacred place by the emperors since the Han dynasty, today it attracts tourist hordes who arrive by a convenient new high-speed train connection, with the fastest trains taking just an hour and 15 minutes from Fuzhou.
The karst landscape is stunning and the area is also famous for tea, specifically the Da Hong Pao breed, which can fetch sky-high prices and lured British botanist Robert Fortune to come in 1849 to try to steal a seed or cutting.
