Alternatively, they may base themselves here, which has a large selection of hotels, while day tripping out of town. Malang is a good base to escape from Surabaya's hustle and bustle as well as to explore the Bromo region. The Dutch came here in the late 19th century for coffee, and the colonial legacy remains today in the form of wide boulevards and grand buildings.
