Guilin & Yangshuo Photo Gallery

Historically, Guilin has featured high on a foreigner's first trip to China. This area was China's first to develop tourism after the Communist revolution in 1949, and politicians have often greeted foreign dignitaries here.

With a beautiful landscape of karsk peaks formed over 200 million years ago when the ocean receded, its beauty can be enjoyed by boat, bamboo raft, bike, or on foot.

Access is now a lot easier with both Guilin and Yangshuo being on the high-speed train line to Guangzhou. The journey takes as little as 2 hours, and less than half an hour between the two.

I recommend allocating a larger proportion of your time to Yangshuo, which has more spectacular scenery and things to do such as bamboo rafting and bike rides. Guilin has some karst peaks in the heart of the city, and is a good base to day trip to the rice terraces. A good split would be 2 nights in Guilin and 3 in Yangshuo. To put that into perspective, the cruise between the two takes a full day, a bamboo raft along the Yulong River a good part of half a day. The rest are a bit scattered but can be readily accessed by rideshare such as Didi.
