Located along the coast in northern China, Qingdao is a laid-back city with a wonderful seaside setting. This place didn't rise in importance until fairly recent times during the Qing Dynasty when a naval station was set up here. The Germans took notice and obtained a 99-year lease in 1897, which ended when World War I invaded and the Japanese invaded.

While not a primary city to visit for foreign tourists, it's an easy side trip from Beijing, with high-speed trains taking as little as 3 hours.
